Poverty: New born teen-mother almost killed

By Jude Melea Moses

An angry crowd almost put to an end the life a teen-mother today when they found out that she had killed her few hours old baby due to what she had called ‘economic hardships’ at a shanty neighbourhood bordering Karu-Site and Nyanya, a suburb in Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja.

According to an eyewitness, that the incident happened around 5:00pm Nigerian time – the pregnant teenager whom was in her late teen disappeared with thoughts from her neighbours that she’s visited the Nyanya General Hospital, since he had complained of contraction lately.

Mrs Musa explained, “she told me she was coming, she said she was feeling some-how, although her stomach didn’t actually protruded but most of us knew she’s pregnant.”

She added, “when I noticed she was not back, I asked Mama Zara and other women if they had seen Hannatu lately, but none of them had seen her.”

“Other neighbours and I were shocked when we saw Hannatu half-conscious rapped on strips of blood.” An eyewitness, Mama Lara added.

An eyewitness, Mr Solo explained how the suspected infanticide, Hannatu was caught in the act, “when my friend and I saw the way she was behaving, coupled with the black nylon-bag she was holding, we knew something was wrong.”

“When we approached her, she started to run, we went after her, caught her and picked the bag – thinking she stole something, we’re surprise at what we saw.” He continued,

“With the physical brutality on this baby, only an evil mother could do such a thing, and as such, she deserves to die.” He added.

The teen-mother was recused and rushed to the hospital when a neighbour beeped the police during the jungle trials in this suburb.

Nigeria is experiencing the worst economic hardship in decades; with Nigeria’s misery index at more than 50 percent, the worst in decades.
