Story series: Secrets (Chapter 3)

Calabar

Dike Edwards was so furious. Despite my sincerity the military wants to play double deal with me? He asked himself

His friend, Captain Pam had informed him of some officers’ secret plan to send in a team to force his hands open whilst still claiming negotiations was on.

Bastards! He cursed

Director Mustapha had been secretly negotiating with him as well. He had offered him a 2billion naira deal to sell the programme to him but he had refused. He was not interested in money. He wants to return to the Army, and he was doing it for honour.

Then you will die for honour, you fool a voice in him had mocked him

Now the Military wants to play double deal with him. He wasn’t going to allow them do it, not now or ever. He was going to leave Calabar that night even if it was going to be on foot. He will first drive to Emerald computers, secure his laptop computer and run into the jungle.

He got into his car and into the road leading to the heart of Calabar. A little distance behind him was another car, closely trailing him.

“Director, its Ben on line!” Felix screamed

“Everybody come on!” Director Dennis screamed rushing downstairs

Immediately, the operations room was occupied by the planners of the mission. The call was routed to the loudspeakers

“We can read you, Ben”

“Director Mustapha………..” his voice tailed off

“Situation report, Ben, get on with it!”

“I’ve just lost my team”

“What!”

The whole room was agitated

“Someone was trailing us, my men were taken out on a close range”

“Damn it, Ben!” Director Malu screamed pounding his fist on the table “your team was taken out under your watch!”

“Sirs, it’s complicated. We’ve been compromised”

In the first contact between them since the mission got underway, Ben shocked them further when he reported of the gun beside the bodies

“Damn it, the military!” Director Dennis cursed

“they must have moved in too!”

“Have you located your target?”

“I’m on his trail”

“How much time are we talking about?”

“I can lock him down in an hour time but I may not call in soon after then, my systems are very unstable and unsecured”

The phone went dead

“Ben, Ben!” Director Dennis called out but no reply

“Prepare a team for a rescue, call Calabar Command to move in” he suggested to Mustapha

“That wont be wise, Dennis” The CG, DCC replied him

“Why not?”

“If the mission is already compromised, we will be sending more agents on a suicide mission”

“Ben will be better off alone. But if we don’t get any form of feedback in time, I will move in a CTU team” Director Malu offered

“Back to your stations, gentlemen” The CG ordered

*******        ***********      ************

Back in his office, Mustapha couldn’t help but feel a cold shiver. That was not according to plan. Hadiza had started her mission with a mishap though without being detected. Ben has been disorganised, now she needs to get Dike before Ben does. He shivered again.

“Mustapha!” Director Dennis called out as he burst into the CG, DCC’s office” I need it!”

“Need what?”

“I need a clearance to move an Alpha team stationed in Calabar. I accept Tahir and Alex are gone, but I will be such a coward to let them take Ben as well”

“Ben will be alright”

“Don’t tell me that. He’s been compromised”

“Come on, Dennis”

“He’s the last in my elite unit now!”

“That’s not my immediate concern”

“Oh, I see. Now you listen, I’m moving out a team, with or without your damn clearance”

“You dare not!”

“Watch me!”

With that Director Dennis stormed out, fuming.
Mustapha knew he now has a new problem at hand. If the Director, Field Ops, no longer trust his decisions and seem quiet dissatisfied with his judgment, he would have more problems, bigger than the ones he has out there.

Dennis is going to do as he threatened, Mustapha knows too well.

Dennis Daniel was 65 year old, 10years older than him. He was in fact widely tipped to succeed Mrs. Tamar Adewale as the CG-DCC after her retirement in the wake of the failed coup three years ago. Then in a process highly politicised, the President appointed Mustapha to the position. He had been the Cellular interception chief before then.

That old man is smart, Mustapha reasoned. If I don’t watch him, he will burst me up, he wants to do it. He decided to watch him closely and stop him from doing anything counter his plans.

He grinned his teeth together as he headed to the satellite communications control room.
