By Jude Melea Moses

The Federal Government of Nigeria has vowed to ban the continues importation of wheat, lead local production and encourage local farmers to step up the production of the produce in the country.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nigeria, Audu Ogbeh whom was represented by the Director of Agribusiness in the ministry, Azeez Muyiwa, said this at the International Conference on Wheat organised by the Support to Agriculture Research Development of Strategic Crop Budget in Abuja.

The minister said Nigeria is currently producing high quality wheat and farmers should be encouraged to do more. He added that he challenges that were formerly reducing the wheat production have been addressed by research institutes in the country.

With the over reliance in crude oil and the negative price fluctuations in the international market, the Nigerian government is running into diversification and agriculture is one inevitable area.

According to the minister, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Bauchi among other states have improved their wheat production, but more needs to be done if Nigerian will rely only on home grown wheat, he added.
