Stories i never told anybody: Part 3

Visiting friends during Christmas is sure a very good thing to do. For it comes with a lot of blessings…..at least a plate of chicken, lol.

I went to see a friend, Adewale, a former classmate of mind whom I heard got married a couple of months ago while I had been in Jigawa trying to control uniformed teenagers…..

“Kai!” Walex exclaimed “see this boy!

I just laughed and helped myself to a seat

“You don grow o” he said touching my shoulders

“Well, I’m doing my NYSC now, what do you expect?”

“O boy, you na big boy o”. He was visibly excited. We reminiscent our school days and talked about boys’ stuffs. As I explored our conversation, I notice that each statement he makes seem to be less pleasant than the one before.

“Walex, where is your wife? You know I heard you now married”

“She’s in the kitchen” he pointed to the direction of the makeshift kitchen.

The room was relatively small with little equipment, an old post-world war II radio, one red sofa; a veiled section housing the “bedroom”….hmmm Walex is really married

“See, Thomson, I married the wrong woman” he lamented with a sad countenance

I heard him say that and immediately became at lost as to whether to burst into laughter or feel sad for him. For one, Walex never admits to making a mistake, he never does. This one was his undoing….

“May be you did, Walex, and I’m not sorry for you, in fact that’s a genius moment, congratulations for the record”

“what!” he stood up in his full 6ft 2 frame looking annoyed” u dey craze?”

“Sit down, Mr. Adegoke Adewale” I calmly requested

“U dey sick abi?” he still queried as he sat down

“I’m not sorry for you because you were the ‘wrongest’ guy I knew back then in school. And right now, you haven’t done anything to suggest you have changed”

I pointed to the empty bottles of vodka and studs of cigarettes on a small chair besides him.

“So after haven not worked on yourself to be the right guy and prepare to be married, you still expected to marry the right woman, that’s not fair to me” I concluded.

He was silent. I didn’t care about how he was feeling that moment. I only wanted to draw his attention to the life he had set up for himself. What I didn’t know, however was that a female figure had been lurking in a corner eavesdropping on us!. We shook hands as I stood to leave, Walex coughed and I turned to see his wife standing, eyes red and hands trembling, with a pot of hot steaming soup-----------

I just stood there looking at her.
